I think it was in one of the WWI-era “Boy Mechanic” books that I found a DIY project opening with the direction to “pick up a few sticks of dynamite at the hardware store.” I can think of a lot of projects I would like to undertake – and many more than I would like to write – that would start out in the same way, today.
Leading off this week’s MAKE Flickr Pool round-up is amateur chemist Hayden Parker’s high-speed shot of a glass blown apart by the high explosive silver acetylide, which Hayden prepared himself. Don’t try that at home, kids.
My personal fave from the MAKE Flickr pool this week is this shot from Shawn Thorsson of one of his fantastic green army men / garden gnome mash-up sculptures. Other highlights include a sweet macro shot of a 1/32 carbide end mill, some panel-pr0n, a multi-exposure trebuchet launch, and more!

As I spoke to more makers, it started to become clear that Google+ Hangouts might just be the “next hackerspaces” — not in meat space but in the online world where skill sharing, project sharing, and collaboration can finally happen (more easily). There were are other ways to do this, but Google+ Hangouts seem to be the shiny new toy at the moment.
