Building your first quadcopter is almost a rite of passage for anyone interested in DIY drones these days, mainly due to the availability of boards like the Ardupilot making it a lot easier to get started. However seven Masters students at Queen Mary University of London just raised the bar for the competition. They built a solar powered Quadcopter, which they dubbed Solar Copter.
Competitive flying, glass miniatures, and hovering apparitions were all part of the First Annual Multirotor Challenge held in Fallbrook, Calif., about a hour north of San Diego. For this brainchild of the Palomar Fly Club over 50 pilots registered to compete in a variety of events. This family-friendly competition was an exciting exhibition what drones can do.

DIY drones are the rage! Chris flew a quadcopter off the stage, and entertained droves of questions from how much weight the copters can carry, to FAA regulations, and announced that they would have a new ARM-based APM (Ardu Pilot Mega) by Maker Faire New York.
Steve Lodefink sent me this amazing video of a guy flying his quadcopter around his neighborhood using a goggle vision system. He even flies it through his(?) house. What fun!
